Valentine Shaker Card Instructions:
Background/Shaker:
Let’s start with making the background/shaker. I do not have any heart dies, so I used Cricut Design Space to create this background/shaker. On Design Space, I used the Folk Art Scallop Heart and the Square Shape.
Desiging the Scallop heart and heart. Select Image, search for Folk Art Scallop Heart, and insert the image. Then resize the image to 3.2” width x 2.7” height. Select the image and go to the Actions function. There you will select Hide Contour and select the inner heart. This will tell Cricut to only cut out the Scallop Heart. Now, its time to make the inner heart. Insert the Square shape and cover the shape over the scallop heart. Select the square and scallop heart and slice the images. Separate the images and select the one with the square and scallop heart. Go to Actions and select Hide Contour, and hide the square and scallop heart lines. This will leave you with a Heart.
Next, insert another square shape and resize it to 4” width x 5.25” height. Select the Inner Heart and place it on top of the rectangle shape. Center it horizontally and toward the top of the rectangle shape. Select both images and use the Attach function, this will tell Cricut to cut these shapes as is. Double check that the Scallop Heart fits around the inner heart by placing it on top of the image.
Now, its time to cut out the image. I used a thicker white cardstock and needed to change the material settings to reflect the thickness. For the red cardstock, I used the medium cardstock (80lb) material setting with default pressure.
Below is a little video on how I created the background/shaker card on Cricut Design Space. The pictures below are screenshots of Design Space on an iPad.
Coloring the Background/Shaker:
Once all the pieces have been cut, you will need to tape the heart and rectangle pieces together, using washi tape. For the background colors, I used Candid Apple, Festive berries, and Spun Sugar Distress Oxide inks. Using a blending tool, start with Candid Apple and blend it on the top of the background. Go about a third down and switch to Festive Berries and blend another third down. Then use Spun Sugar to blend the last third of the background. This will create a lovely ombré look. Once you are done, go back and blend in the lines between color Candid Apple & Festive Berries and Festive Berries & Spun Sugar. Start light because you can always add more color. Since this is distress oxide inks you could mist water on it. Once you are happy with the background remove the heart from the rectangle and set aside to dry.
Cutting the Craft Foam:
So here I thought I would be using my Cricut Maker to cut this foam. But I didn’t because silly me didn’t realize the craft foam I bought was too thick for the Cricut Maker. Since I didn’t want to buy more craft foam, I worked with what I had and cut this out by hand. Using a cutting mat, a ruler, and box cutter, cut the piece of craft foam to 4” x 5.25”. I was ok with cutting it a tad bit smaller because it needed to go behind the background. Then place the background and craft foam together, line them up and trace the inner heart with a pen. Cut the heart out by using the box cutter. To make sure the craft foam was not showing, I used the background piece as a guide and trimmed until no parts of the craft foam was showing.
Stamping and Coloring the Koala:
Starting with the Lawn Fawn i love you(calyptus) stamp set, stamp the Koala on a copic friendly paper and use a copic friendly ink. I used copic markers to color the Koala, but you can use anything to color it. Once you are done with coloring, cut out the Koala. I bought the matching die set, so I used my die cutting machine to cut the Koala out. If you don’t have the matching die set, use scissors and fussy cut the Koala. Either way will work.

Stamping the Sentiments:
Using an acrylic block stamp the i love you and (calyptus) stamps in the center of the inner heart. These sentiments are from Lawn Fawn i love you (calyptus) stamp set. You could also use the stamp platform to stamp these sentiments.
Then using a stamp platform, place the rectangle piece in the platform and place the Happy Valentine’s Day sentiment on the bottom right side and aligning it to the right. Secure the rectangle piece with the magnets and close the stamp platform cover. This will pick up the stamps, open the cover and ink the sentiments with black ink. Close the cover and place pressure over the stamps. You may have to do this a few times to get a crisp sentiment. This sentiment is from Lawn Fawn Happy Happy Happy add-on stamp set.
Card Base:
Cut a cardstock to 4.25” width x 11” height, this is cutting an 8.5”x11” cardstock in half vertically. Place one of the cut pieces on a scoreboard and score at 5.5” line and then fold at the score line. This will be a vertical card base that opens from the bottom.
Putting the Shaker Card Together:
Put glue on the craft foam and glue it centered on the card base. Then place the background (without glue) center on the craft foam and place the inner heart on the card base. Glue the inner heart once it is centered.
Cut an acetate sheet so it covers the inner heart. The piece should be about 3”x3”. Double stick tape to the acetate and adhere it to the back of the background piece. Then add the sequins in the middle of the craft foam cut-out heart. Add double sided tape around the craft foam cut-out heart shape. Then either add more double sided or glue on the craft foam and place the background on top of the craft foam. And that’s it, the card is done.
I had a lot of fun making this shaker card. There was a few speed bumps throughout the process but at the end it turned out AMAZING! Like now I know to buy slimmer craft foam that actually fits in the Cricut Maker. Cutting by hand was ok, but would have been better if the Maker just cut it for me. I love to be inspired by crafty peeps and would love to see your shaker cards.
